Fun Facts about the Beaujolais Nouveau (Source: www.smithsonian.com)* Japan is the world's largest importer of the Beaujolais Nouveau. Germany comes in second and the United States comes in third. *It is illegal to use the word "Beaujolais" in any wine labels in the United States but the word "Nouveau" can be used. California winemakers use the same Gamay grape to make or replicate the Beaujolais wine and some wineries attach the word "nouveau" in their labels and oftentimes releases their wine same time with the Beaujolais event. *Only the Gamay grape is used in making the Beaujolais Nouveau. No other grape varieties is used or mixed with the wine. * Banana scents - a commonly noted as a fault of the Beaujolais can be attributed to a fermentation by-product. *"New wines" are also made in Czech Republic, Italy and Spain.
